War Memorials Rededication Ceremony

On May 25, 2026 – Firetrucks with their lights flashing brought AmVets Post 60 to the Swissvale Library to honor their lost brethren at a Memorial Day service such as Swissvale hasn’t seen in many years.

Girl Scouts from the Environmental Charter School raised the Stars & Stripes on the flagpole originally donated by the American Legion 104 years ago.

Mayors Deneen Swartzwelder of Swissvale and Cletus Lee of North Braddock laid a wreath at the base of the Great War Memorial.

General George Washington read the Declaration of Independence as he did to his troops in New York City 250 years ago.

Boy scouts from Edgewood Presbyterian and St. Bede’s churches laid flowers donated by the family of Larry Furry, ending with a solemn rendition of Taps by Hal Weiss.

Many thanks to Major Alan Smith (Air Force), Ben Stahl (Navy), Bernie Newman, Kate Coluccio, and the rededication committee for putting together a truly memorable program.

Please visit the memorials in their new, honored location at the corner of Monogahela Ave. and McClure Ave. As you rest on the benches, reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave men and boys who lost their lives so we could be free.
